More to know

  • No developer app review: any account with a valid App Password can publish right away. Bluesky now recommends OAuth for apps with their own login and keeps App Passwords for bots and tools, with no removal date announced.
  • Text is also capped at 3,000 bytes (UTF-8), which matters for emoji-heavy or non-Latin text.
  • Text is optional on posts with images, a video or a link card, and required otherwise.
  • Image formats: the lexicon accepts any image/* type with no explicit list; the server may still reject some formats.
  • Images are up to 2 MB each (raised from 1 MB); the official app also caps each side at 4,000 px.
  • Alt text is a required field on every image but may be empty, and is optional on video; no maximum length is documented (the official app caps it at 2,000 characters).
  • Video: MP4, up to 300 MB and 10 minutes (the official app's limit). Videos go through Bluesky's video service, which checks the daily upload limit and processes the video first.
  • A video can carry up to 20 caption tracks (VTT, 20 KB each).
  • The link card thumbnail is optional, an image of up to 1 MB. Bluesky does not build link cards on its own; the client supplies the title, description and image.
  • The optional tags field allows up to 8 extra hashtags beyond those in the text (64 graphemes each). Up to 3 post languages can be set.
  • No documented limit on thread length.
  • Writes cost points: 5,000 per hour and 35,000 per day per account; creating a post costs 3.
  • createSession is rate-limited (30 per 5 minutes, 300 per day per account), so sessions are kept and refreshed with refreshSession rather than by logging in again. Access tokens last about 2 hours, refresh tokens about 90 days.
  • Not offered yet: the new gallery embed (up to 20 images) and quote posts.
