More to know

  • Only professional accounts (Business or Creator) can publish through the API.
  • Captions: at most 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @mentions (IG User Media reference).
  • Images are JPEG only, up to 8 MB, 4:5 to 1.91:1. Widths outside 320 to 1440 px are scaled by Instagram, not rejected.
  • Carousel videos: 3 to 60 seconds, up to 100 MB, 4:5 to 16:9. Today's IG User Media reference has no separate carousel video table any more (codec and frame rate match Reels), so these carousel limits are unverified as of 2026-09-28. Reels: 3 seconds to 15 minutes, up to 300 MB, 23 to 60 fps. Videos wider than 1920 px are scaled down.
  • Reels between 5 and 90 seconds at 9:16 can appear in the Reels tab; other Reels still publish as regular videos. This window comes from a third-party summary, so it only warns.
  • Alt text (alt_text, up to 1,000 characters) is documented for single images and carousel image items. Reels, carousel videos and Stories don't take it.
  • AI disclosure: the aiGenerated setting sends is_ai_generated (Instagram changelog, 2026-06-22). It isn't sent on carousel children.
  • Carousels are cropped to the first item's shape (1:1 by default) unless all items share an aspect ratio.
  • Rate limit on API-published posts per account in a rolling 24 hours (a carousel counts as one): Meta's docs disagree on 2026-09-28 (content publishing guide: 100; media_publish and content_publishing_limit references: 50). The adapter reads the live quota and falls back to 50.
  • Videos are pulled from our public URL, or uploaded with Meta's resumable upload (rupload.facebook.com) when there is no URL Meta's servers can reach. Images always need a public HTTPS URL (never localhost), so image posts can't be sent from a laptop running the local storage stand-in.
  • Metrics can be delayed up to 48 hours.

No. Platform APIs expose only some features. The format guide identifies what you need to finish manually.
