Availability varies by account and format. A missing number is not zero.

More to know

  • The 280 limit is for standard accounts. X's changelog mentions long posts of up to 25,000 characters; heyeveryone keeps 280.
  • Images: JPEG, PNG, WEBP or GIF, up to 5 MB each. An animated GIF can be up to 15 MB (1280x1080, 350 frames), only one per post, and cannot be mixed with other media.
  • Video without Premium: 0.5 seconds to 20 minutes and up to 8 GB (Premium: 125 minutes, 16 GB); H.264 with AAC audio, up to 60 fps, aspect ratio 1:3 to 3:1. The limit follows the posting account, and X refuses a longer video when the post is created.
  • Alt text (up to 1,000 characters) is for images and GIFs only; X says video alt text isn't supported yet. heyeveryone sends alt text for images and GIFs only.
  • Text is optional on image and video posts: X's create-post endpoint needs text or media. Text and link posts, and every post in a thread, need text.
  • In a thread, each post can carry up to four images or one video, not both.
  • Since February 2026, self-serve (pay-per-use) API replies are allowed only when the original author mentioned or quoted the replying account. X doesn't say whether replying to your own post, which is how a thread is built, is exempt; to be confirmed with a live test.
  • Self-serve API posts may carry at most one $cashtag.
  • X API use is pay-per-use: $0.015 per post, $0.20 per post containing a URL, $0.005 per alt text; failed requests are not billed.
  • X's developer terms reserve pay-per-use, Basic and Pro for apps with a limited number of end users; beyond that X expects an Enterprise plan.
  • Poll creation exists in the API schema; not treated as a format.
  • Quote posts are not offered as a format: the X API allows them only on the Enterprise tier.
  • No idempotency key and no documented duplicate check: an unconfirmed post is never resent.
